Listen, I’m going to spare you the song ‘n’ dance of a cute anecdote into which I inject hyperbole and extrapolate meaning because I AM WRITING A BOOK! The book is about intuition, which has resonance in quite literally all parts of life, so I’m actually writing a book ABOUT LIFE which means I don’t have a ton of gas generally but you know what I do have in this tank? Hella recommendations!!!!
Some excellent things as of late:
Leslie Jones on Fresh Air: An American hero
Taffy on Taylor—I will never get it because I’ve heard actually good singer/songwriters in my life on the condition of being girl/woman (see: Ani DiFranco/Jenny Lewis/Tracy Chapman, please just Spotify “female folk musicians” and find yourself listening to something far superior), but I will follow Taffy anywhere: a meditation on the (f)utility of the celebrity profile, and a beautiful example of a good ‘ol fashioned write around.
Elizabeth Spiers on the fact that we can, in fact, STFU, it is a free option available to us all!
This profile of Usher and the paradoxes and pleasures of R&B
The physical comedy and downright silliness of North Carolinian excellence Danny McBride. Just started the Righteous Gemstones and I am laffing.
Women Who Run with the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés: I know, I know the 90s called and they want their female empowerment book club pick back but my goddess this book is so good, and reading it right now during spooky season feels so right. I only wish I had read this sooner!
This chilling article “Why Uncontacted Tribes Want to Stay Uncontacted” (I mean, wouldn’t you?! Some peace and quiet!)
I’m on Day 11 of the Whole30 (if you have ever participated in this form of organized torture, please get at me) and these are my only fun.
Doing corny, overpriced, touristy things: Ever since seeing The Muppets Take Manhattan at an impressionable age, I’ve dreamt of a horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park. When Zoe and Mia visited last week, I sprung Theo early from school, sold a kidney, and we all hopped into a cab pulled by a horse named Whitney. I haven’t been the same—in the best possible way—since.
Love in the Time of Incarceration debuts in pink paperback in less than a month! Pre-order, won’t you?
